With the WISC her highest scores were in the verbal areas. Generally speaking, the RIAS is more of a screening instrument than a comprehensive cognitive measure, with some evidence suggesting a tendency to inflate scores at the high end. The other big difference between the two tests is that the WISC-V has brand new norms, while the RIAS is 17 years old, which is good for at least 6 or 7 points right off the bat, and probably more, since there is some data suggesting that the Flynn effect score inflation due to norm obsolescence is more pronounced at the extreme right hand end of the bell curve.
Unless, of course, you are talking about the RIAS-2, which was just released, in which case the norms are about equally new. Another important factor is her age. Young children are much more likely to have large variances on formal testing, for many reasons, such as fatigue, inattention, not being in the mood, unfamiliarity with the testing process, feeling shy with an unfamiliar adult examiner, etc. There is no way to know a priori which is the more accurate measure of her abilities, especially without any further detail subtest performance, testing behavior, illness, emotional upset, anything that occurred that disrupted standardized administration, etc.
Though as a gross generalization, it would be reasonable to assume that it is more likely that one score is an underestimate than that the other is an overestimate. I am not quite making that judgement here, because of the screening nature of the RIAS, and its age.The test had children do tasks such as follow commands, copy patterns, name objects, and put things in order or arrange them properly.

Based on his research, Binet developed the concept of mental age. Some children were able to respond to the questions typically answered by children of an older age, so these children had a higher mental age than their actual chronological age. Intelligence tests are designed to measure a person's problem-solving and reasoning abilities. Logic, spatial awareness, verbal reasoning, and visual abilities are some of the key areas assessed by many IQ tests. An IQ test is not something that you can really study for in order to improve your score. While you might often hear that brilliant individuals, including Albert Einstein and Steven Hawking, possessed IQs of or higher, or that certain presidential candidates have specific IQs, these numbers are simply estimates.
In most of these cases, there is no evidence that these well-known individuals ever took a standardized IQ test, let alone shared these results with the public. IQ scores have also increased with passing generations. Since the s when standardized tests first became widespread, researchers have noted a sustained and significant increase in test scores among people all over the world.
Flynn has suggested that this increase is due to improvements in our abilities to solve problems, think abstractly, and utilize logic. In a TED TalkFlynn explained that past generations largely had to deal with the concrete and specific problems of their immediate environments. In contrast, people today are expected to think more about abstract and hypothetical situations. Not only that, but approaches to education have changed dramatically over the past 75 years and more people tend to have jobs identified as cognitively demanding.
IQ tests are indeed interesting, but it's important to remember that they are not the only measurement of intelligence. They focus on certain areas of our abilities and, while they do point to how smart a person may be academically, there are areas in life that someone may be better at than others. I'm new here and was hoping you all could help me. My 5 year old son, in kindergarten, was just tested for the gifted program and we just got back his scores. I'm having trouble finding any info on the net. I'm wondering if any of you can help me to interpret his scores to determine what they mean exactly.
Here they are. Composite intelligence index. Thanks in advance for any insight you all can provide. Well 99th percentile means he scored better or equal to 99 out of on whatever the sample was normed against. I don't know enough about the test not in the US to tell how useful that is. I'm fairly familiar with the RIAS because my daughter was given it to support her grade acceleration.
The composite is basically like the full scale IQ score. So if you see a discussion that refers to full scale IQ offor example that's a common cutoffthen you'd refer to that composite number.
There are some reports that the RIAS may tend to give higher scores than other assessments. The RIAS was pretty consistent with my daughter's other scores, except that her verbal intelligence index was a little lower on it and her composite score was a little higher but not much.
She did think the RIAS was the most fun of the tests she has taken. She really enjoyed it. My child just finished the RIAS.
We're still waiting for the details,but were told her IQ is This was the only test she has completed. Does she need more? She probably doesn't need more unless you want a more detailed breakdown. However, there are a few programs that require other specific tests e. Just a point higher on the spread would be PG. And it is just as likely to go down to the lower end of the confidence interval.

Key: AdminGlobal ModMod. Hi all great site! I am new here and trying to find some information on the RIAS. My DD5 Kindergartenrecently was individually given the Reynolds Intellectual Assessment Scales by one of our school districts psychologists.
Her results came back as follows: Intelligence Index Standard Score Composite Verbal Nonverbal My question to you is what does this all mean? Is the Reynolds a valid test? How come the district uses this test instead of a more popular one, is it a money thing? I see that Davidson does not accept this test when determining eligibility for they DYS program.
Can I get my IQ from my CIX, RIAS results?
How come? Is the test junk? Finding out info on this test is few and far between. Maybe I am just not looking in the right places. The public school she is in is one of the few good schools in our district and they do offer a gifted class one day a week at the school. There is another school in the district that offers a full time gifted program which you have to enter a lottery to get into. So it is all luck if you get in. It's not a junk test. Those are very high scores with what looks like a strength in visual spatial and mathematical areas. The verbal score is still gifted as well. She will probably be more able than most children in school gifted programs, however, as most kids in school GT programs tend to cluster in a composite or full scale score range ofdepending on the school and their specific admission standards.
If you are looking to get her into a specific program like DYS, you may have some luck with going the portfolio route. Did the school psych give her any achievement tests that would be acceptable by DYS?
That would further her chances of getting into DYS via portfolio probably if she had qualifying achievement scores. If not, I'd still give a shot with the portfolio or do further testing yourself if you want to go the non-portfolio route.
